ANES 7040 is a two-week introductory a rotation in Anesthesia. It is a high-caliber, self-directed, competency-based educational experience in preoperative evaluation, airway management, intraoperative management and post-operative pain control. Time will mainly be spent in the operating room, supplemented by simulator sessions and a peripheral IV placement day to help establish procedural skills. Simulator sessions include principles of sedation, basic airway techniques and peripheral IV placement.

After completing ANES7040, students may also apply for the advanced two-week elective, ANES 7050. Students may do 2 two-week rotations in 7050 during their 4th year if pursuing anesthesia as a career, and as space permits. The elective focuses on increasing understanding of anesthesia related principles. All students will complete additional, more advanced, competencies and simulation workshops in central venous catheter placement, airway adjuncts, arterial catheter placement and neuraxial anesthesia.

Anesthesia electives are two-week rotations that begin the last week in July and continue through May with the following exceptions: Thanksgiving Break, the last two weeks in December, and the first two weeks in May.

Visiting Medical Students

ANES 7045 is a two-week elective rotation for visiting students. It is a high-caliber, self-directed, competency-based educational experience in preoperative evaluation, airway management, intraoperative management and post-operative pain control. Time will mainly be spent in the operating room, supplemented by simulator sessions and a peripheral IV placement day to help establish procedural skills. Simulator sessions include principles of sedation, basic airway techniques and peripheral IV placement.

Anesthesia electives are two-week rotations that begin the last week in July and continue through May with the following exceptions: Thanksgiving Break, the last two weeks in December, and the first two weeks in May. Space in these electives is limited and competitive. All applications must be submitted through VSAS. A Step 1 score of 220 or higher is required.
