Below you will find some frequently asked questions about our residency program and the application process. 

    The University of Utah Department of Anesthesia offers

    • 4 Advanced Positions
    • 10 Categorical Positions (5 with Intermountain Medical Center, 5 with U of U Internal Medicine Program)
    • 1 Physician Only Position*

    *Physician Only positions are for applicants who have already completed a PGY1 year.

    Applicants applying to the Advanced Program are required to also secure a separate PGY1 position. Individual PGY1 programs in Salt Lake City are offered by transitional year at Intermountain Medical Center. Applications must be sent to this program separately from the application to the Anesthesiology Program at the U. The Anesthesiology Program will communicate with these other programs during interview season.

    We seek to attract and match students who represent the highest in academic and technical achievement, while also embodying warm and compassionate human qualities. Given the highly desirable quality of life in the Intermountain West, we have many applicants who have a prior association with this region. In the last 8 years we have matched applicants from medical schools in 33 states.

    You will be interviewed by the Program Director, the Chair, two additional faculty members who are closely involved with the residency program, and one of our Chief Residents (Chief Resident interview is dependent on availability).

    The University of Utah takes the wellness of our residents and fellows in all programs very seriously. This is evident by the implementation of the GME Wellness Program and the Resiliency Center which focus on providing trainees and their families the support they need during training. Some of the programs offered include counseling provided by accredited clinicians, workshops on stress reduction through mindfulness, child care options, and more. 

    The Salt Lake City area is growing rapidly, and housing options are continually being added to the neighborhoods surrounding the University and beyond. University of Utah Residents and Fellows can rent University specific properties through Partners In Medicine - Utah.

    The University of Utah also has a Preferred Realtor partnership to help provide top-notch real estate services, education, and advice.

    The University of Utah provides employees with free access to all UTA (Utah Transit Authority) public transportation with your employee ID. A covered parking structure offers spaces reserved solely for resident use at a discounted rate, and the University offers a $50/month parking stipend. Most parking structures are a short 5- to 7-minute walk from the hospital. However, many of our residents and faculty ride their bikes to work as we are located in a bike friendly city and campus.

    In addition to institutional sponsored benefits, residents in the Department of Anesthesiology receive stipends to help pay for educational materials, monthly internet bills, and attendance at specialty meetings. Residents also receive department purchased textbooks, phones, and MacBooks.

    Utah offers something for everyone, making it a fantastic place to live. For outdoor enthusiasts, the state provides easy access to beautiful hikes, mountain bike trails, lakes, water sports, fishing, hunting, and many other summer activities, all enhanced by the low humidity. In the late fall and winter, Utah's world-class skiing, snowboarding, and other snow activities are unparalleled.

    For those who prefer indoor activities, Utah boasts several large art and cultural museums, numerous performing arts venues, festivals, and excellent restaurants. Sports fans can enjoy professional basketball, baseball, soccer, and hockey, along with top-notch college sports and affordable golfing.

    Utah also caters to a wide range of interests, from LARPing and civil war reenactments to Comic-con, concerts, food blogging, and gardening. While the ocean is the only thing missing, Utah's diverse offerings make it an appealing place for almost everyone.
