The University of Utah Department of Anesthesiology offers a one-year ACGME accredited Cardiothoracic Fellowship following the completion of three years of clinical anesthesia. The cardiac anesthesia service line provides anesthesia for approximately 800-1000 cases per year at the University Hospital and Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center. The cases include VAD insertion, heart transplant, lung transplant, total artificial heart, major aortic surgery, minimally invasive valve replacement, valve sparing root replacement, structural heart procedures, ECMO, as well as transcatheter aortic valve implantation, MitraClip, and other transcatheter procedures. We have partnered with Primary Children’s Medical Center to offer an elective pediatric cardiac anesthesia experience. 12 of 13 of our cardiac anesthesiologists have achieved Level 3 training in echocardiography as defined by the American Society of Echocardiography.  Our online transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography content is used across the world in nearly 100 healthcare institutions. Fellows will spend one month in the only anesthesia-directed full-service echo lab in the country, where they will be exposed to to the full breadth of cardiac echo services including high volume comprehensive TTE, echocardiography stress testing, and outpatient TEE.

Dual 2-year combined Perioperative Echocardiography and Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (ACTA) Fellowships:  This fellowship track involves two years of training after completing your CA3 year at an approved ACGME anesthesia residency program. Both Perioperative Echocardiography and ACTA fellowships are completed over a two-year consecutive time frame. While ACTA is an ACGME fellowship, Perioperative Echocardiography is not, so to be considered for this fellowship requires submission through the SF Match system for ACTA and a separate application process through the University of Utah Department of Anesthesiology for the Perioperative Echocardiography fellowship.
