Program Overview

This ACGME-accredited fellowship prepares physicians for board certification in Critical Care Medicine (CCM) via the American Board of Anesthesiology.   The ABA has offered certification in critical care medicine (CCM), a subspecialty dedicated to the many and varied aspects of managing critically ill patients. CCM physicians operate from the ICU, and the nature of this work requires additional training in critical care medicine beyond their primary specialty.

Fellows rotate across a variety of specialized ICU settings, gaining experience in multidisciplinary, high-complexity care while building leadership, teaching, and procedural expertise.

  • Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) – Advanced cardiac, Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) including VV/VA-ECMO, and Cardiac and Pulmonary Transplant care
  • Surgical ICU (SICU) – Trauma, Solid organ transplant, and surgical subspecialties
  • Neurosurgical Critical Care Unit (NCCU) – Stroke, trauma, and neurosurgical patients
  • Medical ICU (MICU) – Complex internal medicine patients
  • Huntsman Cancer Institute ICU (HICU) – Oncologic medicine and surgical critical care
  • Burn ICU – National referral and verified center for treating burn injury patients

In total, our ICUs account for ~125 beds and over 7,000 annual admissions.
