U of U Health Names New Designated Institutional Officer and Executive Medical Director of Graduate Medical Education

Mark Harris, MD

Dear Colleagues:

I am honored to announce that Dr. Mark Harris has accepted the position of Designated Institutional Officer (DIO) and Executive Medical Director of Graduate Medical Education, taking over from Dr. Brad Poss who will be retiring.

After 10 years as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology’s Resident Education Committee, Mark was named Residency Program Director. As program director he made significant efforts to expand the diversity of his department and the institution in general. In his role as Co-Chair of the Program Review Committee he led the creation of a data-driven evaluation and remediation system for under-performing training programs. Mark has also concentrated on the systematic evolution of graduate medical education both in the US, and in the low-resource regions of the world.

Obtaining his MPH from the University of Utah in 2014, Mark sat on WHO committees and served on advisory boards for several NGO’s. Mark was born in Scotland, grew up in the Middle East, and returned to the University of Glasgow for medical school and emergency medicine training. Having married an American scientist during medical school, they moved to the US where Mark completed his anesthesiology residency here then joined the Department in 2001. He has a specific focus on anesthesia in neurosurgery and in liver transplantation.

Dr. Harris aims to build on the outstanding foundation created by his predecessor. He is excited to work with our wonderful GME community to cultivate an inclusive, supportive environment where trainees can experience innovative training in a balanced environment.

I extend thanks to Dr. Bruce Herman and Sharee Bracken, Director, Graduate Medical Education, who led the search committee and to others who took time out of their busy schedules to participate in the selection process. I also give a wholehearted appreciation to the other applicants for their diligent energy and efforts.

Sincerely,

Thomas Miller, MD
Chief Medical Officer
