At the University of Utah’s end-of-year Senate celebration, the Department of Anesthesiology’s Professor Harriet Hopf officially passed the gavel to incoming Senate President Professor Richard Preiss from the College of Humanities.
Dr. Hopf served with dedication and thoughtfulness throughout her term as President of the Academic Senate, guiding key conversations and collaborative decision-making across campus. The department extends sincere thanks to Dr. Hopf for her outstanding leadership and commitment to shared governance.
The Senate Executive Committee, chaired by the Senate President, plays a critical role in university operations. Composed of 15 voting members—including tenure-line, career-line, dean, and student senators—alongside several ex officio members, the committee sets the agenda for regular Senate meetings and is empowered to act on urgent matters during recess periods. It also holds final review authority on specific university governance issues, including the approval of College Councils and certain committee appointments.
We thank Dr. Hopf for representing the Department of Anesthesiology and the broader campus community with integrity, and we wish Preiss the very best in his new role!
