Expanding Perspectives: April Senior Resident Presentations

The Department of Anesthesiology is proud to highlight the April 2025 Senior Resident Presentations, featuring the work of Drs. Mary Agarwala, Claire Lu, Flora Liu, and Jordan Noble. Each presentation explored timely and thought-provoking topics—from global health to pharmacologic innovation—underscoring the curiosity, compassion, and clinical insight our senior residents bring to the field.

Dr. Mary Agarwala presented "Global Health", offering a compelling overview of the evolving role of anesthesiology in global health equity. Drawing from her experience in The Gambia, she explored challenges and opportunities around sustainable training, medical volunteerism, and innovation in resource-limited settings.

Dr. Claire Lu presented "Patient Blood Management", highlighting an evidence-based approach to optimize patient outcomes while preserving the nation’s blood supply. Her talk emphasized minimizing transfusions through strategies such as erythropoiesis optimization, blood loss prevention, and increasing tolerance to anemia.

Dr. Flora Liu presented "Pick a Good Dream", an imaginative exploration of dreaming under anesthesia. She drew connections between REM sleep, memory formation, emotional processing, and the neuroscience of altered consciousness—offering a fresh perspective on how dreams differ under sedation.

Dr. Jordan Noble presented "Suzetrigine: The Eighth Wonder of the World?", tracing the science behind a groundbreaking non-opioid pain treatment. Starting with a rare genetic condition causing pain insensitivity, she walked through sodium channel research, clinical trials, and the implications of suzetrigine as a potential game-changer in pain medicine.

We celebrate our senior residents for their curiosity, depth, and dedication to advancing anesthesiology! Watch their full presentations below.
