Celebrating Ether Day: The Birth of Modern Anesthesia

October 16th marks Ether Day, a pivotal moment in the history of medicine. On this day in 1846, the first successful public demonstration of surgical anesthesia using ether was performed at Massachusetts General Hospital. This groundbreaking event forever changed the landscape of surgery and paved the way for the modern practice of anesthesiology.

At the University of Utah’s Department of Anesthesiology, we honor this legacy by continuing to advance the field with cutting-edge research, compassionate patient care, and top-tier education for the next generation of anesthesiologists. Our department proudly carries forward the pioneering spirit of Ether Day, ensuring that patient comfort and safety remain at the forefront of every innovation.

Today, as we reflect on the profound impact of that momentous day in 1846, we also celebrate our own faculty, residents, and staff who work tirelessly to improve patient outcomes through exceptional clinical care and groundbreaking research.

Happy Ether Day!
