Visiting Professor Susan Martinelli, MD, FASA, Inspires Dialogue on Wellness and Professionalism

The Department of Anesthesiology was honored to welcome Susan Martinelli, MD, FASA, Residency Program Director and Professor of Anesthesiology in the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia at the University of North Carolina, as a recent Visiting Professor.

During her visit, Dr. Martinelli led two engaging sessions that sparked meaningful discussion across our department. On February 24, she presented a Hybrid Visiting Professor Research Conference titled “Physician Wellness: What’s the Role of Social Support.” Her presentation explored the critical role that connection, community, and institutional culture play in supporting physician well-being.

The following morning, Dr. Martinelli delivered Grand Rounds on “Perceptions of Unprofessionalism,” offering thoughtful insights into how professionalism is interpreted, communicated, and addressed within academic medicine. Her talk encouraged reflection and dialogue around culture, expectations, and growth.

In addition to her formal presentations, Dr. Martinelli spent time connecting with faculty and trainees, including a delightful lunch with Dr. Bledsoe and Dr. Zimmerman. These smaller conversations provided an opportunity for deeper discussion on education, leadership, and research.

We are grateful to Dr. Martinelli for sharing her expertise and perspective with our department. Her visit strengthened important conversations around wellness, professionalism, and the culture we continue to build together!
