Dr. Flora Liu published in the Journal of Pediatric Urology

We are proud to share that Dr. Flora Liu’s study on infant spinal anesthesia has been published in the Journal of Pediatric Urology

The study–titled “Discharge one hour sooner: Comparing post-operative metrics between spinal and general anesthetics among male infants undergoing circumcision”–compared the post-operative recovery times and post-operative complications of infants using spinal anesthesia (SA) relative to those under general anesthesia (GA). This multidisciplinary effort was a collaboration between the Department of Anesthesiology; the Department of Surgery, Division of Urology; Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital; Pediatric Anesthesiologists of Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital; and Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital Department of Urology.

The research team conducted a retrospective cohort study of 193 male infants receiving an outpatient surgical circumcision in the operating room, observing their total postoperative time from arrival in the PACU to discharge from the hospital. Upon completion of the study, it was found that infants who underwent SA had a significantly shorter post-operative recovery time. Compared to GA, they had a 65.5 minute shorter PACU stay.

Going forward, this study may lead to cost savings for both hospitals and patients, as well as the possibility of alleviating strain on PACU nurse staffing due to higher daily OR throughput rates.

Congratulations to Dr. Liu and her colleagues on this achievement!
